When Roofs Go Wrong: Why the Right Roof is so Important

Any roofer worth their salt should know what kind of roof you actually need, but it's amazing how often we get called out to fix problems caused by the wrong kind of roof - typically a "cold roof" where there should be a "warm roof". Sometimes this is a matter of the roof's age and when Building Regs were altered, but sometimes it's just poor advice or a lack of knowledge - not knowing when a warm roof is needed (to find out, take a look at our dedicated warm roof section). The difference comes down largely to placement of insulation relative to joists, which may not sound like a big deal but if this is wrong it causes poor ventilation, damp and rot, eventually making the roof structurally unsafe (see this example of a roof ruined by joist damp). This is a huge shame when "warm roofing" is so easy to fit retrospectively if the problem is not too far gone (see this example of a retrofitted warm roof).
