These problematic chimneys, in a conservation area at the old gas works in Aberystwyth, West Wales, needed waterproofing.
The chimney pots themselves were disused, having been capped with matching terracotta ventilation caps, which were removable to allow change of use of the chimney flue.
To begin with, the pointing around the chimney stacks was ground out with flat blade diamond discs to 30mm, then repointed with premixed lime mortar (including the chimney benching). This was allowed to dry thoroughly, before all the chimney stack & benching was coated using the polymer system, fully encapsulating with 3 coats.
This gives 1litre/m2 coverage of 10-15 year clear UV-stable, heavy duty waterproof coating - without altering the appearance of the chimneys whatsoever.
Please note: these works are carried out from April to October only.
