More and more people in the UK are catching on to using self-levelling compounds on their roofs - a combination of their high specifications and relative affordability compared to other roofing options.
There are, though, a whole host of advantages, ranging from less chemical venting due to the "cold-applied" nature of polymer roofing (as opposed to bitumen etc) through to the speed of 'curing' - how quickly the roof is both safe to walk on and reaches its potential for e.g. UV-proofing, waterproofing etc.
It goes without saying that self-levelling compounds can only be used on flat roofs (whereas polymer roofing more generally can be used on nearly any pitch of roof) but the range of flat roofs is huge. Flat roofs can be 'warm' or 'cold', depending on the U-Values required for roofs with different purposes. They can be small, such as a porch or garage roof, or huge such as a factory roof; they can be school roofs, kitchen extensions, walkways, balconies, green roofs (directly supporting turf & plantlife). Just this month, we made a mini-golf roof on a flat Art Deco roof.
With roofers who know what they're doing, the possibilities can be almost endless. The roofer you choose has to understand the timings and properties of the compounds thoroughly, with a firm grasp of how to contain the compound within the desired area, how to work with upstands, drainage points, detailing, flashing etc, and what the materials can and cannot do. Additives can improve various aspects, including longevity, anti-skid qualities, speed of curing and more.
